The Blood World Files

Everyone who matters, everywhere it happens, and the exact rules the blood runs on. Drawn from Book One, The Broken Seal: a prologue, thirty-one chapters and an epilogue.

Reads blood for the dead. He holds a standing contract with the Ministry's anomalous-incidents desk, which lets him seal a military scene and answer to almost nobody, a privilege he has never leaned on harder than the night of Flight 701.

The reading is not a gift he enjoys. It has to be drawn out of a fresh trace, it cannot be summoned out of clean air, and it takes something out of him every single time.

Holding a scene nobody else is cleared to hold

The man who sends the text that starts everything. We need you. Priority: One. Norton runs the tent at the Essex airfield and decides, repeatedly, what to ask Zane and what to leave alone.

He trusts the hunches. That trust is doing a lot of work neither man says out loud.

Chapter 1, The Airfield

Found against a wall with his lab coat soaked through, the only thing still breathing in a building that had been emptied. He laughs when Zane tells him he is safe.

Voss lied to the police, and he was instructed to. The client wanted them looking for a human crew.

Chapter 9, The Excavation

Boards Flight 701 at Istanbul and receives its orders not as words but as a pressure behind the eyes. Take the air first. Strip the vessels while they fight for it. Keep what forms. Land the craft.

It counts two hundred and thirty-nine heat signatures in the cabin. Two hundred and twenty-seven of them are vessels. Twelve are something else.

Vessels, and functions

Walks into a locked office and explains, patiently, that the locks assume the person trying to enter is bound by the same physical rules as everyone else. Zane runs a scan on her and it returns nothing at all. No iron, no salt, no trace.

She is not with Marlowe and she is not with the police, and she takes a long count before answering what she is actually doing there.

Chapter 3, Lady in Red

Gives Zane a name and says it will do. She had been in Europe when he called to her without knowing he was doing it.

She has taught this before, to people who mostly did not survive it. Two of them died by using the Seal too well and too far. One was a boy called Karol, twenty-six years old, who only ever wanted to teach in a school. Hamburg, the winter of 1981. She was there and she could not stop it.

The first proper noun in five minutes of Aurelia refusing to give one. Very old, very patient, and, in her assessment, entirely wrong about what he is doing.

He is the reason the police were sent looking for a human crew.

Thirty years keeping Hematech's other ledger. Not the company accounts, the one no auditor ever saw. Every donor bled, every draw taken, every millilitre in and out.

A man who wrote down what everybody else was careful not to.

Chapter 18, Price paid with blood

Keeps the electricity running and the freezer stocked at the house in the valley. She has looked after it for nine years. Her mother did it for twenty-two before that.

Two generations of a family quietly maintaining a house for someone who does not appear to age.

A name Zane asked Aurelia for in the dark under Farringdon and was refused. He gets it anyway, in the epilogue, written into a beach in a line of charred letters nobody else would ever see, gone the instant the next sheet of water slid over it.

It is printed on the inside of his skull now, and that will never wash off.

A Boeing 777 on a night crossing. The cabin lights dimmed, the masks dropped, and the pressure went with them. At altitude that takes minutes to kill, which means everyone aboard was awake for it.

They were starved of air before they died. Whatever emptied them came after.

Cold mist, wet tarmac, halogen work lights and a command centre growling with portable generators. The Ministry concluded there was no longer an active biological threat and began dismantling by dawn.

The official narrative was already being drafted: cabin depressurisation, hypoxia, a tragic but legible mechanical failure.

A private medical facility. High security, refrigerated storage. Zane names it off a sketch before anybody has told him it exists, and Norton looks at him a second too long before deciding not to ask.

Inside: an empty reception, dark monitors, blood dragged across polished white tiles, and a set of reinforced steel doors buckled inward with the locks sheared off the frame.

Sign above the doors
Sub-level storage. Restricted access.

A late nineteen-sixties concrete structure built to look like a modern fortress and function like a vault. The collection is in the basement.

By the time Zane reaches it the street is a strobe of blue light and freezing drizzle.

A low grey building behind a fertiliser depot on the Solway coast. A decommissioned Hematech satellite, listed as closed in 2009.

The manifest noted in passing that it was still drawing mains power thirteen years later. Three letters Zane had seen once, years earlier, on a document he should never have been cleared to open.

A derelict lot with a shaft dropping a hundred feet, worklights strung the whole way down, and an ancient floor at the bottom of it. The great slab does not swing open. It is drawn back from the inside, a hand's-width at a time, by something in no hurry at all.

There is nothing to see behind it. That is the worst of it. Then the cold climbs the shaft and the lights die one by one from the bottom up, until nothing is alight under Farringdon at all.

A reading is not a vision and it is not a gift. It is a transaction with a fixed shape, and it runs the same way every time.

I

There has to be a trace

It has to be drawn out of fresh blood already in the room. There is no version of it he can summon out of clean air. He needs something to reach for, and if the scene has been cleaned he is as blind as anybody else.

II

Contact, and slow the breathing

Two fingers to the trace. Eyes closed, breathing slowed on purpose. What comes back is not chosen and not ordered. It arrives rolling.

III

The cost scales with the freshness

A glancing contact with a residual reading left him drained and nauseous for hours. A direct read from a fresh kill site costs more. He always knows the price before he kneels down, and he kneels down anyway.

IV

The Seal can be used too far

This is the part nobody survives learning the hard way. It is not a matter of running out of strength. Two of the people Iris taught died by using the Seal too well and too far, which is a different failure and a worse one.

Vessels and Functions

Two hundred and thirty-nine heat signatures aboard Flight 701. Two hundred and twenty-seven were vessels. Twelve were functions. Everything the enemy does runs on that distinction, and nobody in the Ministry has the vocabulary for it.

Winter 1981 · Hamburg

Karol

A boy of twenty-six who only wanted to teach in a school dies using the Seal too well and too far. Iris was there. She could not stop it.

2009 · Solway Coast

The site is listed as closed

A Hematech satellite behind a fertiliser depot is decommissioned on paper. Thirteen years later it is still drawing mains power.

Prologue · Over the Channel

Flight 701

The air goes first. Two hundred and thirty-nine people are awake for it. The craft lands anyway.

Chapter 1 · Essex

Priority One

Zane holds a sealed military scene and answers to almost nobody. The Ministry drafts a story about hypoxia.

Chapter 9 · Surrey

Hematech

He names the facility off a sketch. The sub-level doors are buckled inward. Voss is the only thing still breathing.

Chapter 3 · London

Lady in Red

Aurelia walks through locks designed to stop people who obey physics, and gives him a name to chase. Marlowe.

Chapter 18 · The Valley

Iris begins teaching

A house kept for two generations by the same family, and a list of students who mostly did not survive the lesson. Ostler's ledger is the reason they are on the road.

Later · Solway Coast

SWC

A site code, a road, and whatever is still breathing inside a grey building. Reached the slow, human, footsore way.

Chapter 31 · Beneath Farringdon

What Woke

The slab is drawn back from the inside, an inch at a time. Cold pours up out of the gap. One by one, from the bottom of the shaft upward, the lights of the dig die, until there is nothing alight under Farringdon at all.

Epilogue · The Beach

The name he was refused

Written into the sand in a line of charred letters no one else would ever see, and gone the instant the next thin sheet of water slid over it. It does not matter. It is printed on the inside of his skull now.
